Well, just like the rest of the states in the country, Telangana has also so many rich historic places, amazing culture, great landscapes, delicious foods, and just chill as well as kind people. Though not a lot of people think of exploring Telangana’s culture, the thing is, it is kinda special if you dive into it. And the very first thing that gives you a hint of their culture is, of course, the way people dress in this state. If you’re someone who always felt a bit curious about that, then just keep on reading because we’re about to show you the traditional dresses of Telangana for male and female. Here we go.
Traditional Dress for Men in Telangana
1. Pancha Dhoti
First of all, well, the Pancha or Dhoti is one of the oldest outfits of men in Telangana, like super classic! It is a long piece of white cloth that is wrapped around the waist and legs, and it looks really cool and simple. Even now, tons of temple priests still continue to wear it today. And all that, usually cotton, becomes so much fancier with a really nice golden border! Not just that, it is also pretty simple, really elegant, and completely awesome for religious occasions.
2. Kurta
And of course, just like many other states in the country, Kurta is among the most favourite types of clothing that men like to wear right here in Telangana, and that too with a lot of variations. So this is kurta, that is a long shirt made of super soft cotton, you know. And yes, because it’s hot in so many places, so mainly work with those cotton kurtas. But then, men usually wear the colourful kurta for daily stuff and silk for special days.
3. Hyderabadi Sherwani
The Sherwani usually extends to the ankles, looking super royal most of the time. And, of course, guys rock it during weddings or festivals, dressing in shiny stuff like silk, nylon yarn, etc. It does not end here; Sherwanis usually come in dark colours with fancy stone or thread work. This surely goes back to the Mughals and Nizams, pretty cool history, if you ask us!
4. Accessories
And yes, right here in this state, well, men often rock a turban or scarf with these outfits, you know. Of course, there is stuff like Mojaris for those special occasions-those lovely little traditional shoes-or sandals, and sometimes a very nice little scarf known as Angavastram.
Traditional Dress for Women in Telangana
1. Sarees
The women in Telangana certainly love their sarees. And just in case you’re a foreigner reading this post, well, a saree is a long piece of cloth that drapes around the body, one has to agree that it’s a great piece to show off! Let’s check a few famous types, alright?
- First on the list is the Gadwal Saree, which is woven in cotton and silk with really beautiful golden borders and a very dazzling pallu at the end.
- The Pochampally Saree, too, does its very own Ikat tie-and-dye thing, showing off some cool patterns with vibrant colours.
- Yes, the Narayanpet saree is a silk and cotton cloth mix showcasing the coolest checks and designs.
- And then, well, the Mangalgiri Saree is plain fare but equally cool, as they come in pure cotton. With Uppada being soft silk, really thin, and extra fancy!
So absolutely, women will wear these sarees during marriage ceremonies, festivals, family functions, and so on.
2. Langa Voni
Well, Langa Voni, it is a very PRETTY two-piece dress that features a lehenga, which is a skirt, a blouse, and a dupatta. Very surely, it is in silk or cotton and is very colourful. Yes, it could be said that this is totally in for young girls and brides, especially for weddings and festivals, one can say.
3. Salwar Kameez & Churidar
Now to talk about Salwar Kameez, it is believed to be one of the many very simple dresses consisting of a top, bottom, and a dupatta, that is the scarf. And yes, it is true that it’s from North India but caught in trend in Telangana now! Women really do wear these for their casual styles and offices, you know. And that’s not all, there is also churidar that is pretty much the same but has tighter pants.
