Indian Idol is one of India’s longest-running and most popular singing reality television shows. The Hindi-language programme is based on the international Pop Idol format and provides aspiring singers with a national platform to showcase their talent. Indian Idol premiered on 30 October 2004 on Sony Entertainment Television. Over the years, the programme has introduced several singers who later built successful careers in playback singing, live performances and the music industry. As of 2026, 16 seasons have been completed, including two Indian Idol Junior editions that were counted as Seasons 7 and 8.

Indian Idol Season 1 Winner – Abhijeet Sawant

Indian Idol Season 1 Winner

The first season premiered on 30 October 2004 and introduced the Indian Idol format to television audiences. Anu Malik, Farah Khan and Sonu Nigam were the judges.

Abhijeet Sawant from Mumbai became the first Indian Idol winner, while Amit Sana finished as runner-up. The finale was held on 5 March 2005. Abhijeet subsequently became a recognised singer and released music after his victory.

Indian Idol Season 2 Winner – Sandeep Acharya

Season 2 began on 21 November 2005 with Anu Malik, Farah Khan and Sonu Nigam returning as judges.

Sandeep Acharya from Bikaner won the competition, while N. C. Karunya finished second. The season concluded on 22 April 2006.

Sandeep became the second singer to lift the Indian Idol trophy after competing against 11 other finalists.

Indian Idol Season 3 Winner – Prashant Tamang

Indian Idol Season 3 premiered on 4 May 2007. The judging panel included Anu Malik, Javed Akhtar, Alisha Chinai and Udit Narayan.

Prashant Tamang, who came from Darjeeling, emerged as the winner. Amit Paul finished as the runner-up.

The grand finale took place on 23 September 2007, completing one of the most widely followed early seasons of the programme.

Indian Idol Season 4 Winner – Sourabhee Debbarma

Season 4 aired from 19 September 2008 to 1 March 2009. Anu Malik, Javed Akhtar, Sonali Bendre and Kailash Kher served on the judging panel.

Sourabhee Debbarma from Agartala won the competition, defeating runner-up Kapil Thapa.

Her victory was historic because Sourabhee became the first female winner of Indian Idol.

Indian Idol Season 5 Winner – Sreerama Chandra

Season 5 premiered on 26 April 2010 and featured Anu Malik, Sunidhi Chauhan and Salim Merchant as judges.

Singer Sreerama Chandra Mynampati emerged as the winner when the season concluded on 15 August 2010.

Bhoomi Trivedi and Rakesh Maini joined him in the final three. The programme did not separately announce first and second runner-up positions between the two finalists.

Indian Idol Season 6 Winner – Vipul Mehta

Indian Idol Season 6 aired from 1 June to 1 September 2012. The judges included Anu Malik, Sunidhi Chauhan, Salim Merchant and Asha Bhosle.

Vipul Mehta from Amritsar won the sixth season.

Amit Kumar and Devender Pal Singh were listed as the other runners-up/finalists. Hussain Kuwajerwala and Mini Mathur hosted the season.

Indian Idol Season 7 Winner – Anjana Padmanabhan

The seventh season was presented as the first season of Indian Idol Junior, giving young singers an opportunity to compete.

It premiered on 1 June 2013, with Shreya Ghoshal, Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani as judges.

Anjana Padmanabhan from Bengaluru won the title, while Debanjana Karmakar finished as the first runner-up. The finale aired on 1 September 2013.

Indian Idol Season 8 Winner – Ananya Sritam Nanda

Season 8 was the second Indian Idol Junior edition. It ran from 30 May to 6 September 2015.

Ananya Sritam Nanda from Bhubaneswar emerged as the winner, while Nahid Afrin from Assam finished as runner-up.

The judging panel included Vishal Dadlani, Salim Merchant and Sonakshi Sinha, while Hussain Kuwajerwala and Asha Negi hosted the programme.

Indian Idol Season 9 Winner – L. V. Revanth

Indian Idol returned with its regular adult competition for Season 9, which premiered on 18 December 2016.

Anu Malik, Farah Khan and Sonu Nigam were the judges.

Playback singer L. V. Revanth won Season 9, while Khuda Baksh finished as the runner-up. The grand finale was held on 2 April 2017.

Indian Idol Season 10 Winner – Salman Ali

Season 10 premiered on 7 July 2018 and was hosted by Manish Paul. The judging panel included Neha Kakkar, Vishal Dadlani and Javed Ali, with Anu Malik also appearing earlier in the season.

Salman Ali emerged as the winner, while Ankush Bhardwaj finished second.

The grand finale aired on 23 December 2018.

Indian Idol Season 11 Winner – Sunny Hindustani

Season 11 premiered on 12 October 2019, with Aditya Narayan hosting the programme.

Sunny Hindustani won Indian Idol Season 11, while Rohit Shyam Raut finished as the runner-up.

The finale took place on 23 February 2020. Neha Kakkar and Vishal Dadlani were among the principal judges, while Himesh Reshammiya joined the judging panel during the season.

Indian Idol Season 12 Winner – Pawandeep Rajan

Indian Idol Season 12 began on 28 November 2020 and became one of the longest seasons in the show’s history.

Pawandeep Rajan won the competition, while Arunita Kanjilal finished as the first runner-up.

The unusually long grand finale was broadcast on 15 August 2021. Aditya Narayan served as the main host during the season.

Indian Idol Season 13 Winner – Rishi Singh

Season 13 premiered on 10 September 2022. Himesh Reshammiya, Vishal Dadlani and Neha Kakkar were associated with the judging panel during the season.

Singer Rishi Singh from Ayodhya won the Indian Idol trophy.

Deboshmita Roy finished as runner-up, and the grand finale was broadcast on 2 April 2023.

Indian Idol Season 14 Winner – Vaibhav Gupta

Season 14 premiered on 7 October 2023 with the theme Ek Awaz Lakhon Ehsaas.

The judging panel consisted of Shreya Ghoshal, Vishal Dadlani and Kumar Sanu, while Hussain Kuwajerwala returned as host.

Vaibhav Gupta from Kanpur won the competition, while Subhadeep Das Chowdhury finished second. The finale aired on 3 March 2024.

Indian Idol Season 15 Winner – Manasi Ghosh

Season 15 premiered on 26 October 2024. Shreya Ghoshal and Vishal Dadlani returned as judges, while rapper and singer Badshah joined the panel. Aditya Narayan returned as host.

Manasi Ghosh emerged as the winner of Indian Idol Season 15.

Subhajit Chakraborty finished as the first runner-up, while Sneha Shankar secured third place. The season concluded on 6 April 2025.

Indian Idol Season 16 Winner – Jyotirmayee Nayak

Indian Idol Season 16 premiered on 18 October 2025 with the theme “Yaadon Ki Playlist.” Aditya Narayan hosted the season, while Badshah, Shreya Ghoshal and Vishal Dadlani formed the principal judging panel.

Singer Jyotirmayee Nayak from Odisha emerged as the winner of Season 16.

Tanishk Shukla finished as the first runner-up, followed by Manraj Veer Singh in third place. The grand finale was held on 25 and 26 July 2026, with Jyotirmayee officially lifting the Indian Idol trophy on 26 July.

Her victory also made her the first contestant from Odisha to win the regular Indian Idol title.

Indian Idol Hosts Over the Years

Indian Idol has had several hosts since its launch in 2004. Mini Mathur and Aman Verma were associated with the earliest seasons, while Hussain Kuwajerwala became another familiar face of the programme.

Other hosts over the years have included Meiyang Chang, Abhijeet Sawant, Karan Wahi, Mandira Bedi, Asha Negi, Paritosh Tripathi and Manish Paul.

In the more recent seasons, Aditya Narayan has become one of the show’s main hosts, presenting Seasons 11, 12, 13, 15 and 16. Hussain Kuwajerwala returned to host Season 14.

Indian Idol Format

Indian Idol begins with auditions in which aspiring singers compete for a place in the main competition. Contestants who clear the audition and theatre stages progress to televised performance rounds.

As the season advances, singers perform songs from different genres and eras. Judges provide feedback on their performances, while audience voting plays an important role in deciding which contestants continue.

Contestants are gradually eliminated until the finalists remain. The winner receives the Indian Idol trophy and generally receives prize money along with opportunities that can help establish a professional music career.
