On a windy day, India’s clean energy future is visible from far away. Tall white turbines rise over dry plateaus, coastal belts, desert edges and mountain passes. Their blades move slowly, but the power behind them is huge. From Kanyakumari to Kutch, from Jaisalmer to Sangli, India’s wind farms are now an important part of the country’s renewable energy story.
Wind power is especially important because it supports India’s clean electricity mix along with solar energy. As per MNRE data, India’s cumulative installed wind power capacity reached 56,807.04 MW as on 31 May 2026. The government has also said that India has crossed 56 GW of cumulative wind capacity and ranks 4th globally in installed wind turbine capacity.
Unlike thermal or nuclear plants, wind power projects are usually spread across large areas, with many turbines installed across nearby villages and ridges. So this list includes India’s major wind farms, wind parks and large wind project clusters based on capacity, importance and current relevance in 2026.
1. Muppandal Wind Farm, Tamil Nadu

Muppandal Wind Farm in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu is the most famous wind power site in India. Located near the Aralvaimozhi pass, the area receives strong seasonal winds, making it one of the best natural wind corridors in the country.
Muppandal is widely recognised as India’s largest operational onshore wind farm, with installed capacity often listed around 1,500 MW. The project is not one single compact plant but a huge wind energy belt with turbines from different developers and manufacturers. It helped Tamil Nadu become India’s early leader in wind energy and still remains a symbol of India’s wind revolution.

2. Jaisalmer Wind Park, Rajasthan

The Jaisalmer wind complex is generally reported as a 1 GW-plus wind park. Suzlon’s older official factsheet mentioned the Jaisalmer wind farm at over 1.6 GW, while other project listings describe the core park at around 1,064 MW. This difference usually comes from how the larger wind cluster is counted. Either way, Jaisalmer remains one of India’s biggest wind power zones.

In 2026, Kutch is even more important because Gujarat has become India’s leading wind power state. MNRE-linked state data reported Gujarat as the top state in installed wind capacity, and recent state-level reporting placed Gujarat’s wind power capacity above 15 GW. Kutch is also connected with the larger Khavda renewable energy development, where wind and solar are being expanded on a massive scale.

This project is important because Karnataka has become one of India’s leading wind power states. It also shows how India’s wind sector is moving from older small turbines to larger, more efficient machines. In 2026, Tondehal stands out as a major modern wind project, even though some trackers still describe it in construction-stage records.

6. Hombal Wind Farm, Karnataka

Hombal is important because it belongs to the new phase of Indian wind development, where larger turbines are improving generation from available wind sites. Karnataka’s strong wind belt, especially in districts like Gadag, Koppal, Vijayapura, Chitradurga and Ballari, makes the state a key wind energy centre.

The Sangli-Satara belt has many wind projects because of favourable terrain and wind conditions. Dhalgaon’s importance lies in its contribution to Maharashtra’s renewable energy capacity and its role in the early expansion of private wind projects in the state.

8. Vankusawade Wind Park, Maharashtra

Maharashtra’s wind profile lists Vankusawade Wind Park at 259 MW, while Global Energy Monitor separately records an operating capacity of 189 MW for the tracked project entry. This project is important because Gujarat is now India’s wind power leader. The Dwarka and Kutch regions are becoming central to large-scale wind and hybrid renewable development. Sidhpur-II also reflects the new trend of combining wind, solar and corporate power supply models.

Power Technology lists Beluguppa Wind Farm as a 100.8 MW active onshore project, while an ADB-linked project document also describes the Beluguppa site as having 100.8 MW total capacity.
Andhra Pradesh has strong wind potential in districts like Anantapur, Kurnool and nearby dry plateau regions. Beluguppa is not as large as Muppandal or Jaisalmer, but it is still a significant wind farm and a useful example of private-sector wind development in southern India.
